And so it was really like, I call it like my 10 year MBA, like my friends went off and did an MBA, you know, paid a couple hundred thousand dollars to do it or whatever, you know, sat around a classroom and did case studies on General Electric in the 1990s and came out, you know.
knowing so much about business.
That kind of 10 year period with the three startups that we ran, I just felt like was the greatest education that I had.
But, you know, I did want some more stability.
You know, I had gotten married, we're starting to have kids, the mortgage.
And, you know, I had a lot of friends who worked at Google.
And it was like,
This is like being in a startup, but you get paid really well for it.
You don't have to worry about the financial part.
And I remember I said to my wife after 10 years of doing startups, the first month I got a paycheck, I literally came home and I said, they paid me.
They paid me.
You found a new form of magic.
All I had to do was not get fired.
Because when you're running your own startup, you only get to pay yourself when you make money.
There's no backstop when you're bootstrapping a company.
um and so you know that that kind of stress of every single month thinking like have we made enough money to pay my rent um you know we had months where i would take out money on a credit card in cash from the atm and i'd deposit it in the bank account so i could pay payroll like that kind of stress when you live under you know 10 years of it and the ups and downs of that and that low level stress over time takes a toll
And so what I loved is when I got to Google, the whole financial stress went away.
And I could just focus on building cool stuff.
So Google was really fun.
When I arrived, I was one of the few engineering-ish people on the team.
