I started to build my own neural networks.

I built out this neural network that went and did sports gambling, which I thought was very fun.

It was a marketplace to automate and ended up, you know, kind of,

betting every single day on a hundred different random sports across the world using data um make any money huh did it work uh i made uh money the first month lost money the second month and i realized after about three months that um it was just reverting to me there was no edge okay um and so it was a failure literally win some lose some yeah win some lose some flip a coin you know some flip a coin 100 times sometimes you win money sometimes you lose money

But what I learned in the process was like, God, this AI thing is incredible.

And I learned so much by actually building, even if like, you know, even if the experiment didn't work out, I learned.

And that's the thing about like side projects, right?

If you're at a company and you're like, I really want to understand the magic behind this new technology.

you know get a little side project and go and play with it and build something and learn it and like clay you know kind of craft it and put it into something and you know just get experience with it so anyways i caught that bug at google and when i came back to dublin uh we had three kids uh at the time and really knew that ireland was the place we wanted to bring up our kids so i came back in google and i really wanted to do something in uh the world of ai and

How long had you been in the States at this stage?

We were there about three and a half years.

And so when I came back at Google, there's always been a bit of a ceiling in engineering in Ireland for the Googles and Facebooks of the world.

So it was clear that there weren't that many opportunities for me to kind of expand engineering leadership.

So I ended up joining a company called Zalando.

Zalando had about 150, 200 people here in Ireland and it's an AI research lab.

But this is the largest fashion marketplace in Europe.

So there's like 50 million Europeans buy off of it.

It sells like $15 billion worth of clothes.

But it's also one of the first big e-commerce companies that invested heavily in AI research and development.

So it was an amazing playground of data.
