People don't dislike President Zelensky.

This is a sign of a healthy democracy.

Speaking to friends in Ukraine and the build up to my trip who have been involved in these protests, they're eager to point that out, that this is what healthy democracies do.

Leaders make mistakes and it's up to the public then to correct them.

The fact that the Ukrainian public can apply pressure on the president during war

kind of underscores that this country is a democracy and it's not run by an autocrat.

Yeah, of course.

So my mother's family are from Ukraine.

Her father was from there and came to the UK after the Second World War.

We stayed in close contact with our Ukrainian family pretty much all our lives.

It's something that we've always done.

I've visited this country so much over the years.

It's got a real strong place in my heart.

It's a fascinating country politically, how it's evolved over recent years.

2014, the Euromedan, all the way through to now.

Watching

Ukraine develop and continue to develop even though it's currently undergoing a horrific war.

It's kind of amazing to see, coming back to Kyiv and seeing the city again for the first time in seven years has been quite something.

It's absolutely a work in progress, and it's a work in progress that younger Ukrainians, especially younger Ukrainians, and some older ones too, are eager and motivated to ensure that Ukraine comes out of this war in a stronger position, more European, more democratic, essentially completing the task that they started way back in the winter of 2013 with the Euromaidan protests.

Corruption, unfortunately, remains an issue in Ukraine.
