We have to make sure they're feeling safe.
And their sensory regulation, which you've heard me talk about plenty, but when a child is dysregulated, we have to figure out what sensory needs are not being met for them.
Or what is overstimulating for them?
What is causing them to be so dysregulated that they are moving into a stress response that they might be in fight or flight?
They might be in freeze and they might be withdrawing.
what is going on within their body that we are seeing that from them.
Because a child who is living in a stress response or who is in and out of stress responses throughout the day, like they might be regulated one moment, dysregulated the next, regulated the next, dysregulated the next.
I hear that all the time from therapists.
A child who is going in and out of fight or flight throughout the day is going to have such a
an overwhelming internal experience and it is going to be very hard for them to settle into this regulated, ready to lay learn state that they need to be in.
For our therapy sessions.
So I think starting at the wrong step is a big mistake we make that absolutely will prevent progress.
Anytime we work with kids, we always want to start with that um regulation piece and how can we get them regulated so that we can move into the next step, which is how can we get them to engage with us?
So I'm gonna add one more thing to this.
to this whiteboard, which I had not put on yet.
Which is the banister.
And I like to say that the banister represents intrinsic motivation, right?
Because we know we can get kids to sit at a table by using rewards.
But in order for kids to truly learn, they have to be intrinsically motivated.
We want them to enjoy being there.
