So my concept of the language staircase, okay, which is that I like to say picture language as a staircase.
The bottom step is regulation, then you have engagement above that.
Above that you have basic language.
So that's kind of the child talking about things in the here and now.
And then at the top we have higher level language and cognitive skills.
So that's going to be more abstract thinking, problem solving, inferencing, all of these higher level skills.
So one of the biggest things that
Prevents progress?
is when therapists are starting at the wrong step of the staircase.
Okay, so what happens, for example, with a lot of SLPs is we think, okay, well, I'm an SLP, I work on language, therefore I start at the language level.
I start at the step that is language.
And that is one of the things that can impact progress more than anything because so many of our kids, especially our autistic kids,
Really need support with regulation and really need support with engagement and being able to have that back and forth continuous flow of interaction.
And if we don't hit those stairs first, we'll
We are not going to see the type of progress that we want to see with a child's language if they are dysregulated and if we are struggling to get them engaged with us.
Because those are
absolutely essential for learning.
Okay, so when we're talking about regulation, first I want you to think about emotional regulation because a child needs to feel safe in order to learn.
So that is the number one thing.
