already failed at that because we have an 18 month old who we get a lot of singing going on in our house okay using youtube videos okay the next one is 18 to 24 months should only be getting high quality programming and avoiding independent use so like not putting your kid down in front of the tv basically so a lot of slps actually we talk about this a lot because we can use videos oftentimes as something that we're using to interact and engage podcast-host
which is different than just putting a kid down in front of a screen. podcast-host
And then we have the next bracket, which is two to five years. podcast-host
And the recommendation is one hour a day or less. podcast-host
And I wonder if people follow that. podcast-host
Or what percentage of people do? podcast-host
I mean, I know that sometimes we actually have families occasionally podcast-host
talk podcast-host
We've been there, too. podcast-host
But the real issue is, and I think what the research is trying to show, is that podcast-host
When screens replace this high quality back and forth interaction that we have with other humans is when it can become a problem. podcast-host
And as much back and forth interaction as we can get with our kids is great for them, going to help them learn. podcast-host
But the thing is that during these years of where babies and toddler brains are developing, in the first two years, their brains are wiring for language, for social communication and joint attention, emotional regulation, developing motor skills, executive functioning. podcast-host
So many skills are being developed and the brain is being wired for in those first couple of years. podcast-host
And it would be hard to argue that a screen could replace you physically podcast-host
a baby learning to crawl, right? podcast-host
Or learning some of these skills. podcast-host
So that's where it is something that we have to think about when we're deciding on podcast-host
Screen time is the last we'll say about the research because there is so much research, but lots of research that shows that heavier screen time is linked to poor executive functioning, attention difficulties, poor self-regulation, later bedtimes, trouble falling asleep, poor quality of sleep, less sleep in general, emotional regulation issues, fewer opportunities to develop coping skills because if a child, anytime they're crying, we just hand them podcast-host
a screen they're not really developing those coping skills so there's a lot to consider there but also we are going to be real because we are parents and can't say we have followed those guidelines very closely and it was funny we were laughing about this last week which is before we even decided we were doing this episode but we were cleaning the house and we had our kids on screens for podcast-host
