Like, does this kid need so much sensory input all the time to be regulated?
podcast-host
And with kids like that, I'm probably designing my entire session around sensory activities.
podcast-host
Okay, so sensory and communication, I'm working on them all the entire session, the whole time, every activity I'm doing is sensory.
podcast-host
Or we might have these more sensory-specific activities scattered in, meaning this child might just need a little bit of movement, and then they'll be regulated.
podcast-host
Or maybe they could go do one thing with focusing on tactile input, and that helps to calm them enough to be regulated.
podcast-host
And then we could go play a tabletop game or whatever game that they want to play, right?
podcast-host
So are we giving them sensory the entire session or are we just scattering in some different sensory strategies?
podcast-host
And that's one of the ways that I like to think about how am I going to plan my sessions?
podcast-host
So tell me in the chat, just type a, I don't know, type a one in the chat if you can think of a kid who is the all day sensory kind of kid.
podcast-host
you will know who that kid is because that is the kid that you don't have to go to the gym later after their session.
podcast-host
Okay, and type a two in the chat if you can think of kids who you think would benefit from sensory strategies, but it's not that they're dysregulated the whole time.
podcast-host
It's just that you feel like there's something missing, like you're just scratching the surface of their potential and you feel like they would benefit from just a little bit more input.
podcast-host
Okay, so those are two different types of kids.
podcast-host
So the reason this is so important is because we have to know what our goals are and how they're shaping the session.
podcast-host
So for so many therapists, when they think about sensory being separate from speech, they're thinking, so I need goals over here and then I need goals over here.
podcast-host
But that's not how my mind works.
podcast-host
I think of them being together and whatever my goals are for communication are
podcast-host
are things that I'm targeting the entire session.
podcast-host
Okay, so for example, for a lot of my kids who are non-speaking or mentally speaking or just emerging in all of their language, I might have a goal for using multimodal communication or something like that.
podcast-host
And then I am tracking that the entire session, no matter if it's some activity that's purely like sensory and tons and tons of sensory and we're swinging and we're singing, or if we're sitting down at the table and doing a puzzle, whatever it is.
