We had this little girl who was preschool aged and
podcast-host
She had one um experience with like a toy that scared her and then the next session her sitter brought her to the clinic and she didn't want to get out of the car.
podcast-host
And that little girl was super, super anxious and I ended up coming down to the car.
podcast-host
Because I knew like now what let's shift into talking about how we can help.
podcast-host
that in that moment what she needed was to feel safe.
podcast-host
And we know that when kids are in that heat of the moment, having that stress response, when they are truly anxious, their body is not feeling safe in that moment.
podcast-host
So we need to create a sense of safety for them.
podcast-host
And usually just saying, Well, you're gonna have to do it, so go ahead isn't gonna be the right approach.
podcast-host
A lot of times something like that is gonna backfire because A, it really doesn't work for a lot of our kids to like reward them for doing something or to
podcast-host
Give them a consequence.
podcast-host
Most kids in that moment, they are not going to care about those because their brain isn't in the thinking brain.
podcast-host
So they're not even processing what that reward or qu consequence might me might be.
podcast-host
It's just their brain is telling them no immediately.
podcast-host
So we really have to number one create a sense of safety.
podcast-host
But a lot of the things that we can do also, we could do more.
podcast-host
proactively, like for example, I think one of the biggest ones and you talked about uncertainty and unpredictability being one of the biggest triggers for anxiety.
podcast-host
Right.
podcast-host
How can we create a sense of predictability?
podcast-host
How can we create a sense of them feeling more comfortable about what's to come?
podcast-host
Um, for example, we have kids who are like scared of going to theme parks and then we're on YouTube, we're riding all the rides.
