You see timing ultimately ends up being the most important thing in what you do, right?
If we can't be on time for the fastball consistently, then...
We're already playing, you know, behind the eight ball.
That being said, you're talking about different fastball shapes.
It was so funny because early in my career, prior to working with Bobby Tewksbury, I was very adamant that I had to make sure that I saw somebody's fastball so I understood their shape early on.
I understood whether it was a two-seam, a four-seam with ride, whether it had some cut.
As I developed and my swing got better...
I was able to kind of neutralize that.
Now, that doesn't mean it's easy, but you have to understand as a hitter that there's a game of chess, right?
As a righty, right on right, they're probably, when they go to the inner third, they're probably going to work with two seams and try to ride the ball in on you.
When they go up and elevate, they're trying to probably get above your barrel.
When they go to the outer third of home plate, they're probably going to try to go with the cutter, unless it's that front door situation, which is usually like a freeze, two-strike type of pitch.
So you have to, like, understand...
the moments and the situations you're getting into, and then build a swing that allows you to play into it, right?
So for me, it became very, very simple.
Like, I looked at middle to the outer third, so anything with ride or cut was fine.
If they were sinking it, I had to make sure I cut off that inside part.
So if they started down the middle, there were a lot of times where I just had to say, like, okay, if it's starting on the inner third, I have to not swing, right, until I get to two strikes.
And that's just part of the cat and mouse game.
I think...
