The AFL seems to be talking about themselves more often than what people are talking about the games, but

I think there's a level of frustration from umpiring that is really sort of reflective from a lot of different avenues.

So you've obviously got some frustration with the AFL in terms of umpire-player contact and whether enough is being done aside from just finding players.

You've obviously had the incident out of the weekend with Maynard where the guidelines, the MRO using a clearly, in my opinion...

insufficient to deal with an issue that we saw at the halftime break between Collingwood and Gold Coast.

And then I think you've also got, dare I say it, Adam, the role that the media plays in all of this.

I think one of the things that's always sort of frustrated me is one of the key stakeholders in our game, which the media represent, and just the ability for commentators to

to get the decisions right that they're commentating.

I know that when I umpired, I'd invariably watch my games back and I just wouldn't have the volume on because the quality, dare I say it, of the comment being provided around some of the decisions that the umpires, they're just there to deploy how the rules are supposed to be interpreted.

And I think that's probably one of the things that's probably frustrating and creating a sense of confusion and a sense that the umpiring and the lords of the game are struggling with that lack of understanding in some cases.

Look, it's a really good question.

Certainly to be able to ignore that, you know, listen to your coaches, deliver on what the AFL has asked you to deliver on.

I think the umpire's frustration is more around, a bit more holistically too around, you know, ensuring that we've got good community umpires flowing through the system, that we've got umpiring, people taking up umpiring, people wanting to be involved in umpiring, um,

And the media's role in being able to ensure that the game is being commentated in a fair way, with accuracy, I think does concern them.

I mean, all the AFL-listed umpires, they all start at community level, of course, and they know how hard it can be to progress through to the elite level when you've perhaps got a lot of negative commentary around it.

And look, everyone steps in umpiring knowing that there's no...

there's not too many pats on the back.

Most go into it just love of footy, wanting to do the best job they can do, going unnoticed is still probably the greatest compliment an umpire can have.

And I guess just with the attention that that's been drawn through the various media platforms, I guess is certainly leading and feeding into that frustration.
