But believe it or not, umpires are human.

They do listen to their games back.

They do watch a lot of footy.

And I've got no doubt that when some of the commentary that comes through isn't consistent with how the laws are supposed to be implemented, I think that would be a concern for the AFL.

I mean, it's their product.

It's their brand.

It won't be represented in a certain way.

We understand it's also theatre, so there will always be some opinions aired.

But when those opinions are just

at odds with how the law is intended.

But I guess that's where the umpires become frustrated and certainly, in fact, it's not doing a great service to the gang.

Yeah, look, I mean, I actually was at Marble on the weekend, just popped in to see the Essence and Kilda game, and I just couldn't get over, and I know it's common, but just couldn't get over that you've got 36 players almost in one third of the ground.

You've seen, and look, as far as an umpire in the middle of all that, that is certainly very challenging.

I think with the advocation of bringing in a fourth umpire, that's to provide extra resources, so

As an umpiring team, I think whilst, you know, yes, physically you're in close proximity to players, that's certainly not an issue that should bother anyone, notwithstanding, you know, where umpire-player contact is a real risk.

But in terms of being able to fish out the game, in terms of making sure that the umpires see what the cameras see, what the fans see, what the crowds see, operating as a team, having that additional resources...

should give the umpires confidence that it's not all on them in that particular moment to come up with the right decision.

So, you know, it's been controversial around, you know, should we have four umpires, should we have three?

The style of the game, the fitness of the players, it's pretty hard to work back to three umpires.

I think one of the challenges was always around expanding the list, you know, bringing on a lot of new umpires.
