which is absolutely driven by consumer research.
We were more like a retailer back then, mostly merchandising.
There was a moment where we sold rugs and lamps and bowls and baskets.
We pivoted out of that.
And we have arranged our whole company structure to be more like, let's say, a Procter & Gamble, a Pepsi, one of these CPG companies that does pointed consumer research, boils it down to needs to be met, jobs to be done, and develops product to meet those needs with great confidence, knowing that there's a market for those, knowing how big that market is, knowing where it needs to be priced, and all these things.
Most of my competitors don't do that.
Like in the furniture space, they're still merchant-led.
And they're great, by the way.
We have great competitors that have great businesses that are worth a lot of money.
But sure, we are selling $10,000 couches.
So are they.
But the way our business operates right from the guts, from the structure, from the type of people we hire to the way we do work is so different from the way they do work.
And I think it gives us not just a competitive advantage.
Forget that.
It allows us to be differentiated enough that we can operate in the landscape competitively.
And what I mean by that is there's room for many at the table.
They can compete and do great and win their customers.
We can compete and do great.
But you still have to have daylight between your brand and their brand if you want to succeed.
And I think, you know, so just a dumb example like Kid's Actionals gives rise to that discussion.
