Because with horses, even when they break down physically, you can pump them full of injections and you can do these things.
You might be able to get them back to riding, but it's not healing the emotional component of it.
And that's the other thing.
When we're constantly ignoring their problem behaviors...
we end up causing lameness that might have been able to be avoided if we just listen to them.
Because those smaller signs of resistance are often the first symptom of an underlying problem.
But instead, we're taught to push through it because if you don't make them do it, you're less good of a rider and a trainer because...
what we really value at the core of the industry is our ability to make horses do things even when they don't want to but very few people will admit to that yeah they don't want to admit they want this they want this fairy tale of being partners and this profound connection
But then at the same time, they say things that directly contradict that, like ride them through it.
You got to make them do it.
You can't let them get away with that.
Don't let them do that.
And all of these things that are then taught that completely defy the other claims that people make about training horses and what the partnership is like.
So like we want to basically have our cake and eat it too, because we want to be able to say these things.
But then we also want to be able to do things that aren't being held up to the standard of what an actual partnership is.
It's like a very selfish relationship.
Like I'd say a lot of the way the dynamic that a lot of horse human partnerships have.
is the same one as like an abusive relationship pretty much yeah I think that's something that is important to touch on like because when you throw the word abuse around people get their hackles up and they get very angry but I think that like something I've learned as someone who has been in abusive relationships as someone who has behaved abusively to horses myself in the past
You will never find, or I'll never say never, but you are very, very unlikely to find an abuser that will actually be able to identify the fact that they are an abuser because they don't want to be.
They don't want to be an abuser.
