And so you see a childhood of the only boy, he has sisters, in a family where he was told from a very young age that he was special.
I think it depends on the environment you meet him in.
If you see him in his element, which is in the midst of Facebook's offices in Menlo Park, he can come across as very confident, at ease, laughing with co-workers.
It's clear that he is someone that is not comfortable in front of media or I would say unfamiliar environments.
And so in those settings, where I also have observed him as a journalist, he can seem very scripted.
Exactly.
He has an army.
I mean, Facebook's PR army is notorious among journalists who cover Silicon Valley who advise him on everything from what shirt he should be wearing in which interview and how he should be sitting.
It's I think it comes across as kind of overly rehearsed to a lot of journalists who are used to someone who's maybe a little bit more comfortable in giving, you know, off the cuff answers.
I would say that when I speak to people who have known him for a long time or who meet him in environments where he's perhaps more comfortable, like, as you mentioned, his jujitsu fighting ring that he goes to here in San Francisco, or people who have even seen him in Lake Tahoe, where he goes skiing in his, you know, billion dollar lakefront mansion, they talk about someone who comes across as very, very different.
Right.
And his father was a dentist, but was also very, very interested in technology.
His father likes to boast that he liked to bring the most high tech kind of dental practices into the home and that Mark, as a young child, saw that and it helped cultivate some of his interests.
His parents, by all accounts, really, really wanted their kids to succeed in life.
and spent a lot of time and energy in sending them to the best possible programs, the best tutors, the best schools.
