I was able to report that the prime minister's chief of staff had announced to all of number 10 that he was resigning, that like Keir Starmer was resigning.

I was able to report that, but I just thought I can't, I can't miss it if I'm on the tube or walking.

So I'm told it was Saturday, but on early Sunday morning at the time, I was being told by people very close to him that he hadn't made his mind up.

So I'm still actually not sure if we're ever going to completely know.

Yes, but also I think there's a question as to how much the decision was made for him.

Even though ultimately it had to be him, when you think about the exact timings of it, I think that the people around him who care about him had different views as to whether he should fight.

I think some people really, really wanted him to and that was his inclination.

But other people, I think, were worried that that would be a really humiliating experience for him.

And sometimes when these things leak to the media, they're leaked for a reason.

So if you're 90% of the way there to deciding that you're going to resign, maybe that Observer front page was a nudge.
