Typically, the first step, if you have a mild to moderate disease, that you start with topical treatment.
And there are a wide range of options there, both that you can wash the skin with once daily, but also like in gel or lotions.
In Denmark, most of it is on prescription with only one exception.
And usually you see an effect in six to eight weeks, but it can be a
three months until there's an effect.
And some of the most frequently used options here in Denmark are topical retinoids like tretinoin and similar.
And then there's also the mildest option that is off prescription over the counter in Denmark is benzoyl peroxide.
Yeah, that's also very common.
It's typically if you have mild acne where topical treatment fails or if you have moderate or more severe acne.
So it depends on the degree of acne and also on the type.
If there are a lot of lesions that are more inflammatory and more like red and inflamed bumps on your skin, then typically the tetracycline treatments are used.
So it depends on both the severity and a bit on the type of acne.
And these oral treatments, they are traditionally antibiotics.
And maybe some of the effect is due to the antibiotic effect, but mostly it's because they also have an anti-inflammatory effect.
Typically, if you have failed on the other treatments, so topical treatment and tetracyclines or other antibiotics, or if you have severe acne with cysts in the skin.
And the tendency in most countries is that you move more quickly to isotretinoin.
Also because we want to avoid using too much antibiotics because of the microbial resistance, which is a big problem globally.
It's a study based on routinely collected data from Denmark and it includes people who participated in military conscription in Denmark.
So they are young adults who have attended conscription and that involves measure of like height and body weight and questionnaires about health status.
And then we looked back in the Danish registries that are nationwide to see what treatment had they used earlier in adolescence.
