We helped people get new shoes.

And then afterwards, they invited all the volunteers to go for lunch at this restaurant across the street.

We're all sitting at the table talking, and I see one man over in the corner who's a volunteer all by himself, and he looked sad.

And I thought, I should go over and invite him to come over here.

But then part of my brain says, he doesn't want to sit with you.

You're a failure.

You don't have a job.

You can't write books.

Plus, you'd have to talk to him, and I am not good at small talk.

But I feel sorry for him, so I go over and I say, hi, I'm Silvana, one of the volunteers.

He smiles, and I awkwardly say, did you have fun volunteering?

And he says, I'm glad we could give those people shoes.

And then, because I'm bad at small talk, I say, do you want to come sit with us?

You look sad.

And he says to me, thanks for the invitation.

I'm Wayne, CEO of the shoe charity.

Yeah.

I have just told the CEO of a multimillion dollar nonprofit that he looks sad.

But he came over and sat with us.

Now, during the next eight months, my husband and I traveled cross-country to Bellingham.
