I still didn't have a job, and I still felt like a failure.

I had an idea.

I wrote Wayne a three-sentence email, and basically it said, I hope you remember me.

Why don't you buy my husband and I an RV, and you pay us to travel around the country giving away your shoes?

And I hit send.

Ten minutes later, Wayne responds with, send me a one-page proposal.

Now, I hadn't thought this through at all.

I hadn't even told my husband that we might be having a new job.

But I whipped together a proposal and I sent it off.

A month goes by.

Wayne calls me and says, I bought you guys an RV.

Can you be here in three weeks?

And I said, of course.

And then I went and told my husband we had a new job.

And because we were empty nesters, he says, let's go for it.

For almost two years, we drove a big, bright blue RV to 34 states, giving away thousands of new shoes.

And part of my amazing job was to find underserved charities.

And we would go in on the designated time and literally kneel down and put new shoes on the feet of the people that we met there.

We were at one location, and a man came in, and I said, hi, what size shoe do you wear?

He said, I don't know, I just get hand-me-downs.
