So this was quite an extraordinary and surreal moment where the lights go dim in the Oval Office and suddenly this screen starts showing these images and the audio comes in and everyone's looking.
And for South Africans watching, we're very familiar with that particular bit of audio, with those images, because they have been a hugely contentious subject in our own politics.
The man who you saw speaking in those videos, a man by the name of Julius Malema,
He is a firebrand politician.
He grew up within the ruling party, the ANC, but he left quite a while ago now to start his own party, the Economic Freedom Fighters.
So when he was making those comments, he was an opposition party member.
He was not part of government.
And more than that, he was a very minor politician.

And part of the reason that he's in opposition is because he can't win enough votes, because the messages that he is promoting are not resonating with South Africans.
They are certainly not government policy, which is a point that President Ramaphosa made again and again.
But you know, I'm not surprised that Donald Trump
chose to show footage of Julius Malema because in many ways, Malema is South Africa's Donald Trump.
His gift has always been manipulation of media, outrageous statements to generate attention and controversy and airtime.
And I can imagine him sitting at home, wherever that is, watching this thinking, oh my God, Donald Trump is broadcasting my slogans to millions of people from the White House.
But, you know, Don, it's not even indicative of the EFF, the Economic Freedom Fighters themselves.
You know, this...
This particular case got taken to our Supreme Court of Appeals.
So AFRI Forum, which is a sort of white conservative interest group, sued Julius Malema and said that this was hate speech and wound its way through the courts.
And eventually the highest court in the land, second highest court in the land, said, actually, no, because you know what?
