So my journey here started when uh uh it was probably been my mid twenties and I I went back home.

Um uh we have the big family dinners, you know, thirty people around the table with everybody and their girlfriends and boyfriends and so on and so on.

And I uh turned up for this dinner and and went and saw Dad wasn't wearing his hearing aids and went and sat down next to him and said, Dad, what's up?

You know, we spent a lot of time and a lot of energy convincing you you needed these, which you're not wearing 'em.

What's going on?

And he said that, uh look, son, in this situation there's just

don't help.

Um, they just make everything louder, it's all more mushed together, I can't understand anything that's going on.

So I'd you know, I'm happy to take my hearing aids out and just kick back and just be with the family.

Well, you know, that made me very sad because here was exactly the time where Dad needed to connect with those he loved and who loved him.

And it was his hearing loss that was getting in the way of that.

And so uh you know, it sort of dawned on me, Wait a minute, I'm a neuroscientist, I can do something about that and so here I am, many decades later, um, still working in that area.

So that's the the beginning of my research and professional trajectory.

That's an excellent way of putting it.

And in fact, um the hearing aids we're developing with with AI and our machine learning do boost the sound as well, but they just don't do it across the board.

They pick out the bits of the sound that are important to boost and suppress the things that aren't important to boost.

And so that's where the AI element comes in.

No, it it's the researchers that are doing the job and they're using AI as the tool.

Um so it it it plays uh two roles.
