We might say that Trump picked a side, so to speak.
Christopher Columbus tends to provoke strong reactions, and it seems likely that he'll always be a divisive figure.
There's no denying that his voyages were significant achievements, which changed the course of history.
But in recent years, many historians have taken a more critical view of Columbus.
Of course, some would say that we should be careful when judging historical figures by modern standards.
It's true that, to an extent, times were different.
But in the case of Columbus, even by the standards of the time, many saw his behavior as unacceptable.
His treatment of indigenous people in the Americas has been widely condemned as cruel and exploitative.
And his actions set a precedent for colonization, with future generations of Europeans behaving in a similar way, often with devastating consequences.
So, is Columbus a figure to be celebrated?
While some still think so, these days many would disagree.
But as we've seen, his life and legacy are fascinating and well worth exploring.
Columbus forces us to ask questions, to re-examine what we think we know about history, and to search for the truth behind the popular story.
His extraordinary life also prompts us to reflect on many things.
on the nature of human ambition, on the consequences of ruthlessness, and on the impact that a single person can have on world history.
Columbus didn't find Asia.
In a sense, he didn't even discover the Americas.
But about one thing at least, there's no doubt, he left his mark.
God, it's so fucking pretty.
What's it called?
