We don't know exactly when Christopher Columbus was born.
It was likely sometime between August and October, 1451.
It's generally agreed that he was born in the coastal city of Genoa, in what is now Liguria, Italy.
But over the years, this has been disputed.
Some have claimed that Columbus was actually Spanish or Portuguese or even Norwegian or Scottish.
Columbus himself seems to have thought of Genoa as his homeland, a view shared by his contemporaries.
The theories about alternative origins mostly emerged later.
