But by 1492, it was decided.
The Spanish crown would sponsor Columbus's voyage.
It was time to set sail.
Before we get into Columbus's first voyage, let's take a moment to consider his motivations.
Money was perhaps the main one.
According to the terms of his agreement with Spain, Columbus would be entitled to part of the revenue from new ventures abroad.
What's important to note is that Columbus was expected to claim lands for Spain
The objective wasn't simply to reach Asia and establish trade routes, but to claim territory.
This would be lucrative for both Columbus and the Spanish crown.
Prestige and status were other likely motivators.
Columbus was promised the titles of viceroy and governor
any lands he acquired through his voyages.
And of course, successful expeditions would lead to Columbus becoming famous throughout Europe.
Another important factor was religion.
