As news reached Europe, Columbus came to be viewed as something of a tyrant.
Columbus's legacy is something we'll be looking at in more detail later.
But for now, it's worth acknowledging that cruel and unethical behavior under his rule was well documented.

In 1494, Columbus forced his men to swear a declaration that they had reached the region of China known as Cathay.
