And so it's important to only compare to someone that has the exact same salary as you and lives in the exact same places as you and has the exact same amount of parental help or lack of help as you.
And it's very hard to know who fits into that category.
So the only person you can really compare yourself to in terms of how much you should save and invest is yourself.
And so look at how much you saved last year?
and look at your salary of last year and let's say you figured out, okay, I saved like seven percent or I saved zero percent, then your goal for this year is to just save a little bit more as a percentage.
So let's say last year I saved
fifty percent of my salary.
That's huge.
But I don't live in a very high cost of living area right now.
At least in New Zealand.
So on that premise this year, I should probably try and save a bit more.
Now I'm having the opposite experience where I'm moving to a high cost of living city.
So there is no way that I'm gonna be able to save as much as I've been saving now.
But as long as I am not going backwards, which I guess I kind of am, so that's not really a very good financial decision that I am making.
But each year in New York,
As I go forward, I want to try and save more money as opposed to increasing my expenses and not saving as much.
Let's say I only save five percent or ten percent.
I should at least save a little bit more than that the next year.
So that's the best way to figure out how much to save versus how much you should spend.
It's all about where you live.
