He was simply my father.

One of my first memories of watching football was watching the Cup Finals, the Matthews Cup Final.

I would say the late 50s, yeah, 53.

So that was my first really good look at a football match.
Not supporting anybody.
It was a huge game with Matthews and so on, and Blackpool, and Mortenson was the centre forward.
So it was a huge time.
I wasn't a big football watcher.
I was too busy just playing and enjoying my sport.
That's cricket and football.
And you got into football first or football in the winter, cricket in the summer?
Simple as that.
I wasn't an outstanding young footballer that scouts were looking at, a bit like the great Jimmy Greaves.
I'm sure every scout in the country was looking at Jimmy when he was leaving school to go do what he did.
He was the genius as described.
