Nobody was looking at me.

And what happened was a friend of my father called Jock Redfern, he unbeknownst to me and my father, he wrote to at school leaving age for a trial at West Ham or Arsenal.

And West Ham replied first.

Arsenal never replied.

So my first job interview from leaving school from that letter was a trial at West Ham.

When you were 15 years of age?

15 years of age.

And they saw something in me and took me on.

At school, I was a centre-half, strangely enough.

And in my early days at West Ham, I was a midfield player.

So it's quite extraordinary getting to this part of it that I was playing cricket and football, which is disastrous, really, to try and do the two.

Cricket doesn't finish until September.

Football start training in mid-July.

And in 62, 63, I played for Essex Cricket and I won first class game.
