Now, I'm a big one for kindness.

I think kindness is how we should live in the world, right?

But I also think that giving in to false and malign authority can be really damaging.

And 11 years helped to free me from some of those patterns that weren't actually fully conscious.

And I think, you know, that's what Freud said.

It goes way back, you know, that neurosis are these...

instilled patterns that we don't really know we're doing.

And until they become conscious and you can examine it and actually, I think, really feel its wrongness...

you're not free.

So I think since I was quite young, I always felt...

more free and more alive when I was writing.

I mean, it is just you and the page.

At the same time, I strongly feel that those years of psychotherapy and even during those years,

that it also liberated me into my work more fully.

So the mythos of having to cling to your craziness because it will make you a better writer I think is absolutely untrue.

I think that's nonsense.

Yes, it works better.

And I think when I was younger—

working on books, well, it's hard to say, but that I sometimes felt that I was scraping my way down through various drafts into the Ur material, what really counted, and that I was more defended than I am now.
