I was asked over and over again about that part of the book and not in the United States.

So I think there is some suppression of my argument in the book, which is connected to seeing the rise of a kind of proto-fascism.

Mm-hmm.

And that there are strong parallels between what was happening in Germany in 1933-1934 and what's been happening to us, which is not to say that it's the same, right?

It is not the same.

And I could articulate all kinds of differences, including the fact that I think here in the United States there is a real resistance, and that was not the case.

But the rhetorical strategies, the creation of a kind of fantasy reality, those are strong parallels.

And Paul and I both felt very strongly.

And of course, he did not live to see the election of 47.

He died before that.

In the last letter, which is in the book, I include letters that Paul wrote to our grandson, Miles, an imaginary older grandson who could understand the letters, not the two-and-a-half-year-old or the four-month-old.

That's how old Miles was when Paul died.

But he says in that very last letter, he knows he's dying, and he says, I won't die.

know what will happen in the election.

I don't know if the Republic will be dead or on life support.

And I think we're still waiting to see.

So that's an important thing.

And I do feel it's important for people to

to discuss this and not suppress it.

I mean, I'm often glad neither of my parents lived to see this.
