Right.

I think actually growing up in two languages, and of course there are people who grow up in many more than two, but two was enough for me to have a sense that what you can say in one language

is not necessarily present in the other.

And I think that alerts you to how our perception, how we look at the world, is influenced by language and that there are

is more than one way to perceive, right?

So I think that's a good lesson.

Writing is, yes.

Writing, well...

My father was a professor of Norwegian language and Scandinavian literature in Minnesota, where I grew up.

But the summer of 1968, I had turned 13.

The family was in Iceland, and my father was studying the sagas, the Icelandic sagas.

And that summer, I read many novels.

But the novel that created the turn...

was David Copperfield.

I was so moved by Master Davy's childhood.

And it was in the summertime in Iceland.

It never got dark.

For the first time in my life, I had trouble sleeping.

So I stayed up reading.

And I remember reading David Copperfield and feeling so overwhelmed that I had to stop.
