So I first became aware of them when I was researching a a piece.
I'm a journalist.
So I was researching an article and it was kind of pandemic time and I was
I'd kinda gone down a tunnel of of stories of people who were trying to escape the land in different ways or live at sea or cast themselves adrift and found myself on this castaway website with all these little
sort of snapshot stories of of of different people.
And it was mostly all these kind of very wild bearded, grizzled looking men, and then
tucked away in in and among them all was this little black and white picture of a man and a woman, a young man and woman.
And they just caught my eye.
I was immediately intrigued why they were sort of in this this unlikely grouping and who they were and why they were together and and what had happened.
And then, you know, I quickly sort of found out a little more
And once I realised the sort of sheer kind of scale and length of time and the sort of feat of their endurance, I guess, I was pretty hooked.
Completely.
I mean that there wasn't sort of no coincidence that I was up in my little sort of workroom with my kids and my husband downstairs and that I was sort of obsessively researching stories of of escape, of trying to kind of get away.
Um, you know, that feeling of entrapment or of
isolation and and but but I think it is particularly that feeling of like being that we all had of
y you were if you were with your family or with a partner or with a spouse, I obviously you you felt incredibly lucky in that time to have that kind of company, to have that sort of solidarity, but at the same time
You were really you were trapped together and it was that sense of being kind of y you knew there was a community maybe still around you, there were neighbours, there were other people going through this thing, but you were
also living this very atomized, very separate, very isolated existence and th the kind of claustrophobia of that, I guess, uh uh there was something in their story that
I I mean what didn't feel fam familiar in any literal sense, but yeah, at that sort of more like I guess metaphorical level it was
It didn't feel wildly different, I guess, from from what we were kind of all going through in our own homes.
