And there was that sort of I remember my husband turning to me at one point, just sort of being like, Well

Isn't this isn't this sort of what marriage is, isn't it?

It's sort of, you know, especially right now, it's kind of like we're adrift on the ocean and a version of what he said ended up being a line in the book and um because it yeah, it just rang very true for me.

Yeah, I mean I I can now tell a version of this which sort of is very neat and and linear and and if but if I'm more honest

It took me a really long time to figure out what was one and what was the other.

And I you know, I've been writing sort of long form mostly articles for a long time and I used to be an editor in magazines.

I'd edited those sorts of pieces for for a long time as well and

I was very familiar with that form, the kind of five thousand to eight thousand word piece.

And, you know, most of the the ideas I'd ever had professionally hits have ended up in at that length or uh it edited to that length.

And I but I've been wanting to write a book for forever and and been trying to sort of find an idea that would I felt sort of w was worthy, I suppose, of being expanded into something longer.

And I'd I'd sort of tried and failed that a number of times.

uh you know, had had sort of done that I think classic kind of sometimes journalistic mistake of

of tr trying to overstretch a an idea that was too thin or

Or thinking that a book I I don't know, I mean people write these books and th they can work brilliantly, but it's not my favourite kind of book, I suppose, to and it certainly wasn't the one I wanted to r to to write, but I ended up sort of trying to figure out if there were like a bunch of pieces I could tie together into a book on all on a a theme and and eventually and really only when I kind of came to this story and found this story and also and and found not just the the sh the sort of drama, the sort of top layer of event, I guess, but

all the the currents that seem to lie beneath it.

It was only then that I I sort of realised, oh no, this th yeah, the the

I I was only then I really learned, I guess, what I felt like a book actually requires, which was a sort of well the kind of book I wanted to write anyway, which was a single narrative, but one

that and that had characters at its heart but but that offered uh lots and lots of different sort of places that you could explore, I guess, along the way and sort of psychological territory that you could explore.
