And I think it's really important to realize that often when people are doing things like constantly checking news that's stressing them out,
they're engaging in weird coping behaviors, not consciously, but that actually don't allow their brain to become more okay with the thing.
Absolutely.
And I would also say, probably 97% of the time or higher, when you're checking that news article, you didn't actually find out some new danger.
You're simply being reminded.
And so why weren't you stressed right before you checked the news article?
You already knew about that thing in some sense, or you predicted that it was going to happen, or you know AI is changing.
You maybe didn't know that exact change was going to happen, but you knew it was going to change.
So there's some way in which you haven't fully kind of adapted the information you already have if every new news story is stressing you out.
Well, the irony is that there's so many different frames you could have on this, although it's easy to get sucked into one frame, but a different frame you could have is like, you could feel really good about all the good that you're doing and you could feel even happier when you're able to do more, right?
And so there's this idea of like, what are the kind of motivational sticks and carrots that we have?
And one thing I've tried to cultivate is like a feeling of enthusiasm and excitement for improving.
But you could do the exact opposite.
You could just beat yourself up for not being already better.
Right.
And those are both motivational tools.
Right.
Carrots and sticks.
And so I think we often kind of assume like the motivational tool has to be the one we're using.
But like it's possible you could achieve just as good outcomes and actually feel a lot better and be more productive if you were somehow.
