And I'm not saying it's easy, but you're able to be like feel good about it.
the good that you're doing and feel even better about doing more and feel excited to like, you know, push the edge on how much good you can do.
Right.
It's sort of like this baked in assumption that like feeling that you have to feel bad about it.
And that's like the way to get the outcome.
So I have a podcast called Clear Thinking where I bring on guests each week and I ask them to pick four ideas they think really matter.
And we have an intellectual discussion about those.
And recently I had on Steven Zerfus and he had this really interesting idea that I've been thinking about ever since then, which is the idea of clean fuel versus dirty fuel.
And this is this idea of like, how are we motivating ourselves to get stuff done?
And a lot of really high achieving people
use what he calls dirty fuel, which is essentially we beat ourselves up or are really harsh on ourselves as a way to get really good performance.
And the irony of it is often it does work for people, but it has tremendous psychological costs.
And also, it can be unsustainable.
It might actually be bad in the long run where they burn out or actually don't achieve their goals because of the psychological costs.
And then there's this idea of clean fuel, which is like other ways to motivate yourself that don't have the psychological cost or even have psychological benefits.
And I think a lot of this goes back to people figuring out how to get themselves to behave the way they want.
You know, I don't know your own situation, but you can imagine like when you were younger, like you're trying to get yourself to do a good job or, you know, be excellent.
And then you like develop these psychological strategies and you kind of observe that like when you apply the psychological strategy of like, I'm not doing enough or whatever it is.
you get better performance out of yourself.
And this happens to all of us.
