I don't have to work on it, because you're only responsible for things you can actually do, or something like that.
So your specialness ties into feeling like you can actually do something here, and then that gives you a moral responsibility.
But that's not the only thing your guilt comes from.
And I don't know that that would be, if I were trying to help you feel less guilty, I don't know that that would be the causal avenue I would approach.
I would probably approach it a different way.
Maybe thinking about, well, what is this guilt doing for you and what's its cost?
On that magic dial, what would you choose?
How much guilt would you choose to feel?
Would you choose to feel the amount on the magic dial if you could control it?
Is the guilt actually helping you do a better job or is it actually impairing you and making you do a worse job?
And then also guilt, if we think about what it is, what is it detecting in the smoke detector model, right?
It's detecting a feeling like you've done wrong or you've violated regulations.
a moral standard.
And then I would ask the question, well, have you really?
Like, is, you know, working 80 hours, I don't know how much you work, but is working 80 hours required as a moral standard?
Like, should everyone feel guilty for not working 80 hours if they could make a difference, like you believe you can, et cetera?
So there's, my point being, you know, not to, you know, psychologize you too much, it's just that there's a lot of causal structures here that could be explored and it's going to be individual and you really have to get down to that micro level of like, you know, where's that guilt coming from?
In the survey, we bundled depression with feeling hopeless.
And the reason we did that is just because they tend to be very intertwined.
Depressed people very often feel hopeless or a sense that they can't do anything that matters or that the future has no value in it.
