And actually, it was somewhat common, but not that common.
So only 29% of people reported experiencing this.
And that's enough that you're like, it's concerning, but it's not what most people are dealing with, interestingly enough.
Absolutely.
Just the feeling that you can do something that's worthwhile is actually a critical part to feeling hope in general.
It's useful maybe to talk about what is depression because I think it's really linked to the sense of hopelessness.
And my model, and I will say this is not shared by everyone, but my model of depression is it tends to happen when you feel like there's no value left.
You can't produce anything of value.
The future has no value.
And imagine you went into a cave to go exploring and the front of the cave collapses.

You're just stuck.
And then your body goes into this very low energy state where you just kind of lie around with no motivation because there's nothing worth doing.
And I think that's an analogy to what it feels like when you feel hopeless or depressed.
There's nothing worth doing.
What's the point of anything?
It's all going to be meaningless in the end.
And now you might think that to get out of this state, you need to solve some existential challenge.
Maybe as people who are intellectually inclined, that's where we want to go with it.
