I think for others, the best strategy will be acceptance.
But acceptance does not mean that you're not resisting it and trying to stop it.
Acceptance is a psychological attitude of, I accept that this thing is a possibility.
My mind is not rebelling against reality.
But that doesn't mean I'm not going to work my hardest to fight it.
In fact, I might be more effective fighting it if I accept it.
And so the idea here is that sometimes our brains do this thing where we try to deny reality because reality is difficult.
And in that fighting against reality, we actually can make it really hard to get to a psychologically stable state and keep ourselves in this perpetual fear state or just regulated state.
Well, I think a useful metaphor here is imagine a patient that is likely to be terminally ill, like they have a high probability of being terminally ill, but there's still some stuff they can do to kind of increase the probability of survival, right?
And let's say they have a year to live, but it's a chance to survive if they kind of do everything right, but they probably won't no matter what they do.
What is the best attitude for that patient to have?
And there will be some individual variation, but I think one healthy attitude
would be to try to fully accept the possibility that they're going to die, so there's no longer mentally rebelling against that, while still taking effective action to reduce that probability.
And those things don't have to contradict each other.
It might actually be helpful to contrast this with other strategies that are not helpful.
So one of the other strategies not helpful is to be in denial and be like, no, I'm definitely not going to die.
Everything's just going to magically work itself out.
That actually might be really detrimental in multiple ways.
One is it might actually interfere with them taking effective action because they're in denial about the danger.
Another is that because their brain hasn't sort of accepted it,
