Like it might just keep coming back and coming back and they have to kind of fight it, fight off those thoughts.
This state of acceptance is one that's sort of like a little bit tricky to wrap your head around, but it's something like moving your baseline of expectations to fit reality.
Yeah.
Often, when a bad thing happens, it will take us some time to move our expectations.
So a good example of this is imagine that you have $10,000 in the bank account, and then you get scammed or something, and you lose $3,000.
And then every time you check your bank account, you feel like, oh, this sucks.
I have $7,000.
I hate that.
But imagine instead you had like $4,000 in the bank account and you got a windfall and you got $3,000.
And so now you check and you have $7,000.
You're like, yes, I have $7,000 in the bank account.
You might be literally the same person and you have the same money in the bank account, $7,000.
But the psychological experience is completely different.
And it's because the baseline is different.
In one case, your baseline is 10,000, so 7,000 feels terrible.
In the other case, your baseline is 4,000, so 7,000 feels great.
So there's this idea that the way we react to things depends on our baseline.
And we can resist moving our baseline when things happen, which ends up actually extending our suffering.
But if we can move our baseline to match reality faster, it can actually smooth it out and make it easier to deal with difficult things.
Yeah, and I think this goes to the kind of really common perception that somehow accepting it means you have to stop fighting against it.
