What I would say is that there's very likely something that could connect with you around this.

And it's probably not around the factual questions, but something around your emotional experience.

And so the idea is not to mislead about what's going on, but to find some aspect

that's more about the way you feel and the more about the effect it has on you that they can connect to and they can relate to and empathize with, right?

So with animals, it might be that you saw something that disturbed you, right?

And you can say, hey, I saw this thing and I felt really disturbed by it, right?

And so that's not making a factual claim about the objective nature of this problem, but it's like, I was really bothered by this.

And then they can relate to the fact that you are bothered and connect over that.

So, or let's say with AI, maybe your friends and family have other concerns about AI, right?

Like, they're not the same as yours.

And you could talk about it in a broader way.

Say, I'm really concerned about AI.

Like, in my job, I have to think about it all the time.

And it actually, like, really, you know, I find it disturbing to think about.

And you don't have to get into the exact facts and then negotiate, well, what's actually true.

A lot of our friends and family, they want to connect with us and they want us to feel better and they want to empathize with us, right?

But we can accidentally derail it by making it about the facts.

I think it's really important to note that there's incredible amounts of disagreement around these topics.

And so if you're super duper confident you've got the correct answer, it's worth being a little bit epistemically humble and say, even among really smart people who are really deep in this, there's a lot of different topics.

And so at least for that reason, we should hold these topics a little bit lightly and not be kind of, and I'm not saying don't be opinionated.
