It's not something to take seriously.
And we think it's really, really important to take seriously.
Or even if they think, oh, animal.
I don't know why you're focused on animal suffering.
That's silly.
You might think, well, that's going to be automatically isolating, and you can't connect with that person.
But I don't think that's the case.
And I think we can actually still have really good relationships, even if we have these differences in important beliefs.
So one thing is trying to convince someone of the belief is often a mistake.
Like if they're interested, you could tell them about why it matters.
But if you're getting to the point where you're like arguing about it, yeah, that will tend to create a sense of like disconnection.
However, people who care about us
most of them are going to be willing and interested in connecting over things we find difficult.
And so you don't have to make it about the exact details of the thing.
For example, if you work in, let's say you work in animal suffering, you could talk to a friend, even if they don't really buy it and they don't think it's that important, you could say,
I find my work really challenging sometimes.
I'm thinking about animals being tortured, and it really bothers me viscerally, and it's hard for me.
And I think most of them would be able to really relate to that and give you empathy and give you support, even if they don't think animal should be an important cause area or they don't buy it as something significant.
So I think there's ways to talk about it where you talk about it more in terms of your experience rather than in the conversation requiring that they buy into a set of assumptions.
Yeah, and that might be true.
