Like you're utilitarian, or you believe in virtue ethics, or right theory, or rule utilitarianism, whatever it is.
Because I think the answer here is actually going to differ somewhat based on that.
When I talk about intrinsic values, I'm not talking about what is objectively good.
I'm talking about what you actually value.
Imagine we have this incredible device that completely analyzes your psychology.
What would that device say about what you actually intrinsically value as an empirical fact?
So one thing that I find helpful about valuism is it changes some of these questions from these incredibly difficult philosophical questions to empirical questions about your own psychology.
And so from that lens,
there's a question of, yes, you probably really, really care about sentient beings not suffering and the world not ending.
Those are probably deep, important things that connect to your intrinsic values.
And you also care about loving connection to your loved ones and maintaining your relationship with them and having pleasure in your life and not suffering yourself too much.
And so then we can now ask the empirical question,
How much do you care about each of those?
And the answer to that is not going to be a stable number.
In my experience, there's a claim about human psychology that is going to depend on to what extent you're neglecting each of them.
That if you are investing all your kind of focus on
reducing suffering in the world, there's a good chance that the other values will pull a lot harder.
And if you really inspect, you're going to say, those are mattering more now to me because I neglected them.
I have not been satisfying these values.
And then the way I approach it is I try to strike a balance between these things.
