When we really neglect values that are extremely important to us, I think that they start to pull harder, and we start paying a higher and higher psychological price to not having them met.
And I think this is what happens when someone is all in on the mission and only thinks about the mission and doesn't take into account their other values.
They start to pull harder and harder psychologically, and I think that leads to things like burnout.
I think it's one of the causes of burnout is neglecting your other important values.
One thing I think is really interesting about the effective altruism community, and this is how I frame it as a valuist, which is different than how other people frame it, is I think it's a community, more than anything, that's bonded together by having really strong values around reducing suffering and increasing happiness broadly for all conscious beings, and really strong values around truth.
And so it's kind of fascinating to me how like often effective altruism is kind of think in terms of like utilitarian terms.
Utilitarian terms doesn't care about truth.
Utilitarian is like, you know, in theory, someone could be like, yes, I'm going to lie from utilitarian ends, right?
But actually this is a community that cares deeply about the truth also.
And I think that's not at all captured in sort of the utilitarian ethos, but it is captured in almost everything the effective altruism community does is that it's very truth oriented.
So I would say,
It's a community with these two really strong values, and that's kind of what unites it.
Right.
To reinforce what you said, even if you think there's an objective moral truth and you think you know what it is and you plan to pursue that, there's still psychological facts about who you are as a being.
And if you think that your actual value system places equal value on the suffering of a mouse as it does the suffering of your mother, then unless you have a really bad relationship with your mother, then you're very likely deluding yourself.
So it's important to understand what kind of being you are, what you actually value, even if you don't
fundamentally care about those values, I think you'll pay a very, very significant price to not understand your values.
Yeah, in our book, The 12 Lovers, we have a whole section on this.
And I will just say, parts work at kind of a broader umbrella term.
And there are actually multiple different therapies that use this concept, including schema therapy, self-compassion-focused therapy, and then also internal family systems, which you mentioned.
