The performance optimizing move involves
genuine rest, right?
It involves variation of things.
You're not always working just on that one skill set.
You're going to have off days.
You're going to have days where you're practicing other things or doing cross-training or whatever.
And that's even if you just care about optimizing for the goal.
And so I think we have to be realistic about what is this state?
What is it doing for us?
And what kind of beings are we realistically?
Well, I think there are a few issues going on here.
One is that people can have a sense that the way they get social credit is by being the hardest worker or the one who's doing the most good or whatever.
If you're in a community that values that, that can become a kind of optimization metric.
even to the point of it being unhealthy and even past the point of it actually really being admired.
It's just sort of the sense that, well, I'll be admired more if I push this way.
And I think that can be an unhealthy dynamic of competing over who can grind themselves the hardest.
I don't think that that is the way I would want the community to be, but sometimes maybe people can perceive that and that can have negative consequences.
The other thing is that even if your goal were just to get the maximum performance,
you have to be realistic about what kind of body you have and what kind of mind you have.
And grinding all the way is not actually the way to get maximum performance, even though it's a naive version of trying to get maximum performance.
