They build incredible businesses and they climb mountains and they swim across oceans and they do all of these different things because they genuinely want to.
And so grabbing a piece of paper, journaling about, hey, what am I spending my time on these days?
And so I always want to tell people, don't
And you might write down a bunch of things.
Chase an extrinsic motivation that doesn't belong to you.
You might say, oh, I'm trying to please my boss by doing well on this project.
Find the one that exists within you because it is so much stronger than anything out there.
I really want to run a marathon this year.
I'm really nervous about a fight I'm having with my sister.
And by doing so, you will be able to get all of the things that you're looking for.
You just write down everything that's on your mind that you're trying to figure out or solve.
Happiness, well-being, mental health, a sense of accomplishment, the satisfaction of your needs and the people in your life.
And then just go through and mark down any of them that seem like they're extrinsic and see if you can drop them.
All of those things are fulfilled if we discover that intrinsic motivation within us.
let go of them, change them in some way, or find something to replace them.
And the more that we do that, the more that we can really orient our lives around the things that matter most to us.
When people say to you, oh, just live an authentic life or whatever, I always get kind of annoyed because thinking, what does that mean?
How do we translate that into action?
I generally recommend starting with just taking an audit of what you're doing.
It feels really vague and really broad.
