But he was a link with music hall, really.
He was sort of the last of the music hall comedians, I think.
He really does go back to that kind of... He used to come on with a drum and beat it.
And it's the kind of, you know, attention-getting kind of thing that you needed if you were fighting the drinkers in a music hall.
There's no point in coming on and being subtle.
You have to come on with a drum and get their attention.
And what he did, and the number of jokes he did per minute was extraordinary.
Not a lot of them, not all of them hit the mark, but there was always another one coming up.
As I say, I wasn't a huge fan, but when I saw him live, I thought this is an extraordinarily clever thing to do.
So he must have had time to heckle, actually.
It was a scattergun thing.
I think what it was, was that it was, you know, those religious revivalist meetings where people start sort of shouting and shouting
the atmosphere becomes so intense that you start to sort of
punching the air and enjoying the whole thing.
And he kind of did that.
He built up a momentum of jokes that he could say anything in the end, you know, a random word.
And people got into such a habit of laughing after what he said, they would laugh at that.
So the jokes were irrelevant.
It was a kind of momentum.
