So in order to compete with those Chinese automakers, they're saying, we need to produce in China too.
We can't produce in Europe or the US for global export.
After five years on the road, the average EV will still be able to drive up to 95% of its original range.
We're used to the experience that our phones lose a lot of their battery life after a fairly short period of time.
And I think people just then assume the same will happen with EVs.
And it's a reasonable expectation.
And in fact, the early EVs like the Nissan Leaf, which came out more than 15 years ago, they did have quite poor battery longevity.
But it's turning out that the latest EVs with their kind of more automotive-grade batteries...

They're getting hit on all sides, really.
Their North American business has really been challenged by tariffs that President Trump introduced last year.
Meanwhile, they've been losing market share quite rapidly in China, where they were the market leader for decades, because local companies such as BYD and Geely are rapidly taking market share.
And now their European market is also coming under strain as the Chinese automakers have been making further inroads and Tesla has also been rebounding.
So it's a whole host of things.
And that's led their management team to decide that they really do need a fresh plan on top of all of the restructuring they've already done.
GM is a company that pays a lot of attention to share prices, I would say.
And
it kind of escaped its attention that Ford's share price is up 24% over the past month.
Ford was making clear that it was repurposing battery capacity that it previously earmarked for EVs for energy storage.
GM is actually betting on a different technology, one that it isn't using for cars now.
