He was definitely sending money.
He was definitely communicating with allies in these places.
But he I don't think he was directly running those operations the way he would from the embassy bombings onward.
Well, that he's a dangerous radical and that he's funding people who are carrying out violence against uh all sorts of targets.
Um, this becomes acute after the first World Trade Center bombing in New York in nineteen ninety-three, which is carried out by a loose network of veterans of the Afghan war.
In the investigation of that, Osama's role as a as a funder, as a financial hub and possibly a weapon supply hub.
Becomes apparent.
He attracts attention on that basis.
But there's something else going on that we haven't mentioned, which is that in addition to preaching against the United States and its allies, he's preaching against the royal family with particular energy at the same time in this period.
And he's sending cassette tapes back into the kingdom in which he denounces.
The royal family as illegitimate.
And he really, in a way that will become familiar, there's no subtlety about his strategy.
I mean, someone in his position who wanted to have an impact, say, in a war against the United States, might find a way to keep the Saudi royal family at bay by not so explicitly offending them.
That's not his way.
He just, you know, he tells the truth.
They tried everything because they they really didn't have a lot of tools, but they were getting more and more angry as this went along.
