I think about Franklin Roosevelt and I think about the speech he gave to Democrats in 1936.
And he talked about a couple of things in that speech.
And two of them, I think, are apt for everybody who's our age, who's Generation X, that in our 20s was told that
history was over and it reached its zenith, its endpoint.
Democracy was triumphant and that we stood at the precipice of peace for a time at all times in an age of unlimited prosperity ahead.
And it didn't turn out to be like that.
And Roosevelt in that speech,
talked about that there's a peculiar rhythm of history that of some generations, much is given, and of others, much is expected.
And he said of that generation, which we remember as the greatest, that they had a rendezvous with destiny.
And they did.
And I think this generation does as well.
And in that speech, he talked about that we had a king and we got rid of the king and we had political liberty.
But because of the inventive genius of mankind and the ambition of men to become kings, there are new empires, new monarchists who have risen up.
And they were defeated by Roosevelt in his day, but now we have Musk and we have Bezos and we have Zuckerberg and we have a new king and all of his economic royalists and monarchists
who want to rule by decree, not at our decisions.
And so at the end of the day, this is a perpetual cycle, that there will always be an accumulation of power into too few hands in the American system of government.
Its inventive genius allows us to smash it.
And that's what we have to do.
