Well, yes, and the form in which the calories come in your diet.
So is a calorie a calorie?
So if you eat fewer calories or eat more calories, are you going to live longer or less long as a result of the calories themselves or
Is it really much more important from where those calories come?
In other words, whether they're in the form of protein, carbohydrate or fat?
And whether or not the combination of those things matter, the ratio of different nutrients one to the other and whether that has more of an impact on your health and longevity than just pure counting calories.
And overwhelmingly the data from this study indicate that it isn't calories that matter, it's the form in which they come and in particular the proportions of protein to carbohydrate calories in the diet.
What we found was several things.
Firstly, the calories don't explain how long mice lived.
Now this is clearly a study on mice, not on humans, and so
the findings we need to take with a little bit of caution.
But the longest living mice
And the ones in best metabolic health.
were those that had throughout their lives a relatively low protein content in their diet coupled with a relatively high carbohydrate content.
And with relatively low fat content.
Those mice, even though they ended up a little bit more adipose, chubby than mice on a higher protein diet,
they lived the longest and were in best cardiometabolic health.
The ones that lived least long fell into two groups.
They were either the mice that were fed a low protein, high fat diet with relatively low carbohydrate.
or those on a high protein, low carbohydrate diet with relatively high fat.
