And the latter mice, the high protein fed mice, ended up very lean, but they didn't live very long and they had really poor markers in metabolic health.
That's about thirty percent of their lifespan.
So there was it's a substantial increase.
And it's similar to the longevity effect in the conventional caloric restriction regime.
This was quite interesting.
The cause of death in the high protein, low carb fed animals
So far as you can tell, the thing is when when a mouse dies, unless you're there to collect it right at the moment of death, you can't do any particularly useful physiological analysis.
But the markers of health, cardiometabolic health, showed that they were insulin resistant, they had high levels of circulating blood sugars.
and they had poor cardiac function.
So these mice on the high protein, low carb diet were in bad shape.
There's another really fundamental finding which we didn't publish in this paper, this is coming out in a forthcoming one, which is that their gut microbiota was very different.
If you looked at the gut microbial ecology of these different mice, the bugs that live in their gut
The high protein, low carb fed ones that lived least long had a community of microorganisms which would typically be associated with poor metabolic health.
Whereas those on the low protein, high carb diets, the ones that lived longest and were in best metabolic health, had a strikingly different microbiome.
The microbial ecology in their gut was that, which you would probably associate from earlier studies with better cardiometabolic health.
We restricted calorie intake in an unconventional way.
Other studies have done that by giving the animal a smaller portions of food and the animals typically eat it very quickly.
And for the rest of the day hang around with nothing to do as they've eaten all their food in the morning.
That's right.
So what we did, however, was dilute the diet with indigestible bulk and there was a straightforward decrease in longevity as they ate fewer calories.
